Rail Infra Forum 2023

Infrastructure for Sustainable Rolling Stock

Most major manufacturers of rolling stock are working on sustainable alternatives to diesel trains for non-electrified railway lines, such as hydrogen and battery trains. However, green rolling stock innovations and developments cannot thrive in isolation. They need to be accompanied by progress in the energy system as well. For example, refuelling and recharging infrastructure will have to be built.

How this will stand to impact upon the development of new hydrogen and battery trains, and how retrofitting solutions for existing rolling stock can play a role in decarbonising rail are some of the topics that were discussed at the Rail Infra Forum 2023 in Rotterdam on March 14-15.

A total of 100 railway professionals interested in making rail more sustainable attended the event.

Intelligent Rail Summit 2022

Cutting costs without cutting corners: Asset management, monitoring and the use of data in times of turmoil

The railway sector is disproportionately affected by the current cost crisis. Already under strain by the elevated costs of raw materials and materials following the COVID-19 pandemic, a steep increase in energy costs now risks derailing the sector’s prospects. This is where innovation comes in, such as new ways for utilising data.

Data is gaining importance for asset management, performance monitoring, predictive maintenance and optimising operations. Efficiency gains and new insights from data from operations all have the potential to result in cost savings and help support decision-making.

These and other topics regarding Wayside Train Monitoring Systems (WTMS), infrastructure monitoring and asset management were discussed during the Intelligent Rail Summit 2022, which took place on 16-17 November 2022 in Konstanz, Germany.

Around 100 railway professionals from 18 countries attended this edition of the Intelligent Rail Summit!

Intelligent Rail Summit 2021

Asset Management, WTMS & Monitoring in Rail Infrastructure

Floods and extreme warm summers have shown that the railway infrastructure and rolling stock are very vulnerable to unexpected changes. Also the expected increase of train traffic forces the railway sector to ‘predict the unpredictable’. At the same time, there are sustainability goals that have to be met.

What are the next steps in asset management, Wayside Monitoring Systems and monitoring of rail infrastructure? This question was answered during the Intelligent Rail Summit that took place on 21, 22 and 23 September in Euskalduna the center of Bilbao.

RailTech Infra Forum September – The implementation of ERTMS

After decades of discussing and designing, the Europe-wide implementation the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is finally taking shape. More and more European countries are reaching the implementation phase. But some of them also paused implementation again. What are reasons for stopping and what are the most important challenges that need to be tackled before a real Europe-wide system can be achieved?

The second edition of the virtual conference RailTech Infra Forum focused on this topic took place on 28 & 29 October.

Track Access Charges Summit – the digital edition

The allocation of track access charges is an area of intense debate in the rail sector. On 14 and 15 October 2020 the discussion continued during the 5th edition of the Track Access Charges Summit. This edition of the Track Access Charges Summit was, due to COVID19, an online event.

What difficulties is the industry facing, especially in these extraordinary times with COVID19? And what can we learn from best practices and failures in other countries? These were topics that were discussed during the digital edition of the event.

The 2020 digital edition of the conference focussed on both the regulative and political aspects of track access charging and the implementation of the minimum access package and different additional aspects. Already implemented models were presented and ideas and approaches to improve the schemes especially in relation to a fair intermodal competition were discussed.

Track Access Charges Summit 2018

The Track Access Charges Summit 2018 offers a unique podium to discuss best practices, latest regulations, cost calculation methods and to share experience related to Track Access Charges.

The latest EU directives and implementing regulations for Track Access Charges (TAC) aim to reduce the costs of railway operations and to harmonize TAC’s throughout Europe. The use of track-friendly rolling stock is stimulated through lower TAC’s which result in lower overall transport costs essential to competing with other transport modalities.

At this 3rd edition of the Track Access Charges Summit you will learn about the implementation of those new directives. Expert speakers will present their views and solutions. You will meet other TAC professionals and will be able to share your experience at this high-level conference.

At the TAC Summit 2018 industry leaders will discuss TACs in great detail, and will highlight the different points of views of infrastructure managers, railway undertakings, and vehicle producers. As previous Track Access Charges conferences in 2011, 2013 and 2015 have shown, it is worth making the effort to debate this topic at a European, system-wide level.
