Site visit

On 12 November from 14-18h, the Intelligent Rail Summit 2024 Site Visit takes place at RailBaltica’s Ülemiste station.

The Ülemiste International passenger terminal, part of the Rail Baltica project, is a pivotal infrastructure development located at the heart of Tallinn, Estonia. Designed as a modern multimodal transport hub, Ülemiste terminal aims to become a major gateway linking Estonia to the rest of Europe through the Rail Baltica high-speed railway network.

The terminal’s architecture (designed by globally renowned Zaha Hadid Architects) reflects contemporary design principles, emphasizing sustainability, passenger comfort, and efficiency. Its strategic location near the Tallinn airport enhances its functionality as a key node for both international travelers and local commuters. The terminal is designed to facilitate seamless integration of rail, bus, and air travel, complemented by pedestrian and bicycle access to encourage eco-friendly transportation options.

Inside, the terminal is planned to house various passenger amenities including waiting areas, ticket offices, retail spaces, and dining options. Advanced technology will be used throughout to ensure smooth operation and optimal passenger flow. The terminal will not only serve as a transport hub but also as a public space that contributes to the urban development of the surrounding area.

The Ülemiste terminal is more than just a station; it’s envisioned as a vibrant public venue that fosters connectivity, making it a cornerstone of the Rail Baltica initiative to enhance mobility across the Baltic States and beyond.

First phase of construction works started in 2023. Besides construction of the terminal building and platforms, related railway infrastructure and public areas are being constructed simultaneously. Rail Baltica national implementing body in Estonia, Rail Baltic Estonia, has just announced the international construction procurement for the superstructure of the terminal building. The project is aimed to be completed by the end of 2028.
