Sustainable propulsion in rolling stock

Sustainable alternatives to diesel trains for non-electrified railway lines such as hydrogen and battery trains are currently widely in development. However, green rolling stock innovations and developments do not stand alone from the rest of the railway and energy system.

What is the impact of alternative propulsion in rail, and how can refuelling and recharging infrastructure be achieved the most efficiently?
